Signing quilts has been popular for many years, originating when quilting began. Friends signed blocks for a new bride and groom, for church fund-raisers and for special friends. They called them signature quilts. And experienced embroiderer usually embroidered the names on the blocks over the people's signatures.

With the invention of permanent fabric pens, quilters have continued this tradition.
